I’ve been on a journey of creating health and wellness in my life now for almost half my life now, my major hurdle being that of diabetes. There is a whole slew of books on diabetes and trying to find the best books on the subject can be difficult. I thought it would be nice to condense down a list of my opinion about some of the most helpful books on diabetes. Note that this list has no real order to it, they are just the books I found most helpful.
The Blood Sugar Solution by M.D. Mark Hyman
This is actually the most recent book I have read on healing diabetes and needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Hyman Provides a completely comprehensive guide to conquering high blood sugar ranging from what supplements to take, what exercises he recommends for diabetics and 100 pages of diabetic friendly recipes and shopping lists for a meal plan. His whole plan revolves around a six week program to get your blood sugar back on track and your life back to health!
The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally by DR. Jason Fung
This one was a pretty recent read also and is probably the book on diabetes with the most controversy surrounding it right now. Dr. Fung Like most Dr. Hyman believes (as do I) that diabetes can be reversed, though these two have slightly differing strategies. Dr. Fung is an adamant believer in intermittent fasting along with a low carb diet. I know that this idea turns a lot of people off, not eating for 16 hours (Dr. Fung recommends 30-36 in his book) is a little daunting. I’ve personally implemented intermittent fasting in my daily routine and have seen great results with weight loss!
The End of Diabetes: The Eat to Live Plan to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes by Joel Fulhrman M.D.
Another wonderful book on diabetes that focuses on food being thy medicine. This book focuses on essentially a vegan diet. Before you start throwing hunks of lamb at me please keep in mind that I am a carnivore but, now a days my plate has at least 70% veggies on it and it is pretty common in our house to have a vegetarian or vegan meal two or three times a week. Dr. Fulhrman focuses specifically on your calorie to nutrient ratio and how to maximize it by eating your veggies, the book also comes with a huge amount of recipes. If you are looking for some drastic results I really can’t recommend this book enough.
Dr. Neal Barnard’s Cookbook for Reversing Diabetes: 150 Recipes Scientifically Proven to Reverse Diabetes Without Drugs by DR. Neal Barnard
Uh-oh… another book about a plant based diet. Dr. Barnard has a few books out about moving towards a plant based diet to improve ones health and I would have put them on the list but I gotta say that a lot of these recipes are super duper yummy. I realize that it may be a little hard to wrap your head around changing your diet so drastically but it has been shown again and again that people get results!
The Whole30 Fast & Easy Cookbook: 150 Simply Delicious Everyday Recipes for Your Whole30 by
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
This one is for the meat eaters out there and I know its not directly related to diabetes but, this veggie centered cookbook might as well be an honorary member. So many good recipes, there is something for everyone in this book! If you haven’t I really suggest checking out the whole 30 it was one of the first things I did to start getting in control of my blood sugar.
I really hope this post has been of service to you all and I wish you all the best of luck on your wellness journey!
